Karen Nott - Retail - Kalamity Karen
Karen is the Owner of Kalamity Karen, a clothing design and manufacturing company and the best kept secret in Iowa Falls, Iowa. She has been a part of the community for 40 years, involved with music, teaching and performing as well as putting on some style shows to make people more aware of what we have in the area.
In the early 90's Karen and her husband became interested in Western cowboy clothes, which took off in another direction as she started making men's clothes, shirts, vests, pants and jackets. Soon after Karen started making prairie dresses and bonnets, however her true success was found when she started making fancy women's apparel. With an unbelievable entrance into the world of entrepreneurs, Karen unexpectedly found her niche in the simple style clothing of the late 1800’s. After being introduced to a group called the “National Congress of Old West Shootists”, Karen became engrossed with clothing styles of the nineteenth century.
Beginning with simplistic men’s styles, Karen quickly sharpened her skills and was finally able to tackle the style of her greatest interest, elegant women’s styles of the 1870’s through 1890’s. With impeccable design and immaculate craftsmanship, Karen sews custom products striving to produce an end result that will give life to each client’s vision, specializing in one of a kind, Victorian clothing. She now possesses a fantastic customer base all over the country.
Karen has had a national magazine shoot with an article and has appeared in several documentaries regarding cowboy shooting. When asked about her success Karen says "Success is achieved by hard work, determination, guts and ambition. My mother always told me that a job worth doing is worth doing well. That is the motto I have lived by and have passed onto my children and grandchildren. You can do anything that you make up your mind to do. Never tell me that I can't do something. It isn't in my makeup."
On her free time, Karen enjoys music, horses and spending time with her family.
